MEAA 2010: Winner Showcase, Binocular by Al Khuzairie Ali

Mohd Al-Khuzairie Ali, a ceramics major from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), credits Umibaizurah Mahir – or Umi as she is casually known – for opening his eyes to the possibilities of ceramic as a medium for contemporary art. His exhibition, titled Binoculars, borrows its title from the optical instrument and symbolizes the artist’s act of looking into the distant future with his nineteen ceramic works, which in turn consist of three discernable series: Reborn, Mind Machine, and Android.

About

MEA Award is a biennial competition that honours the most promising young artists in Malaysia. Its main goal is to recognize the country's top emerging talents and to give them the opportunity to break into the local and international art scenes.

The 5 artists with the highest number of votes from a panel of respected juries will receive cash prize, coucher for art materials, 10-day travel grant to a city in Southeast Asia and a showcase of their works.

MEA Award is organized by HOM and Galeri Chandan.

30 ARTFRIENDS

30 Artfriends is a loose association of 30 art collectors who are joined in friendship by a mutual passion for modern and contemporary Southeast Asian art. The group comprises 15 Malaysian collectors and 15 Singaporean counterparts. They came together to produce a coffee table book entitled 30 Artfriends: Appreciating Southeast Asian Artworks which was launched last year. The publication is an honest depiction of the personal inclinations of each individual collector, and all proceeds from the book sales are contributed or will be contributed to the development of art education and activities in Malaysia and Singapore.
