MEAA WINNERS SOLO 2016: IMPERIUM BY SHAFIQ NORDIN

‘IMPERIUM’ is the first solo exhibition by emerging contemporary artist Shafiq Nordin. One of the five winners of MEAA 2013/14, this latest exhibition by the young rising star features 10 exciting new works in various dimensions skilfully presented in his signature style, effects that mimic the characteristics of woodblock printing. In ‘IMPERIUM’, Shafiq adopts a more matured approach toward issues related to politics and society. His thought provoking metaphors, mind boggling situations and outstanding workmanship is on full display for this very first solo outing at HOM Art Trans. ‘IMPERIUM’, which means ‘absolute power’ is used in this context as a statement of condemnation of its abuse at the hands of the unscrupulous, aided and abetted by the opportunistic and fanatical. Many of these characters are aptly presented from the various types of animals usually associated with negative human traits. Wolves, chameleons and hyenas are not positive metaphors in popular imagination while the apes, which are closest to us, possesses the will for good and evil. No matter which animal are on display in the canvases of Shafiq Nordin, the artist’s main intention is to make us recognize the ‘beast’ in us so that we would be shocked and sickened into realizing the urgent need to reclaim our humanity which, in our mad rush to secure and protect our own little interests, we gave thoughtlessly into bestiality.

‘IMPERIUM’ is a much anticipated showcase of engaging works by a promising young artist whose simple objective is to continue to work hard so that Malaysian contemporary art will one day be recognized internationally

MEAA WINNERS SOLO 2016: DREAM WORLD BY ONG XING RU

MEAA winner Xing Ru selected a cat as a character to interpret her work. The fat round body made the character seem ‘cute’ and cartoon-like. Simple shapes in three-dimensional made the cat presented in a dramatic way. Xing Ru uses acrylic as a medium on canvas, with the cat character, presenting the relationship between cats and human, as an outsider and insider. Cats are the insiders, as occurred in the matter, and “man” is an outsider, he symbolizes the spectator role.
