MEAA 2014 : Winner Showcase, Ong Xing Ru

Ong Xing Ru was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur and received her Diploma in Fine Arts from the Malaysian Institute of Art, Kuala Lumpur, graduating in 2008. She has been exhibiting since 2008, displaying works at key exhibitions and winning the First Prize in the Issey Miyake Art Composition (Essence of Life) in 2008.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

These artworks depict my observation of human characters in their everyday lives, whether as an individual or collectively in a society. They portray the contrast of human behavior given to their surrounding situation; between being asleep or awake, between the strong and the weak, to follow or to object the standard rules of the world.

MEAA 2014: Winner Showcase, Sabihis Pandi

Sabihi Pandi studied and gained his BA of Fine Arts (Hons) from UiTM Shah Alam, Selangor and has slowly been gaining momentum in the local art scene by participating in numerous group exhibitions. His exhibitions to date include Nandos Art Competition in 2009 and 2010, Tanpa Nama/ Anonymous, Bank Negara Malaysia in 2012 and Wajah M50 Kini, Morne Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur in 2012.

He has been awarded with the Bronze Award at the UOB Painting of the Year competition recently, and currently lives and works in Ara Damansara, Selangor.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

This series of artworks described or questioned the fateful events that have caused a stir in our recent lives. Using visual images inspired from scenes in a magic show; I tried to picture my personal thoughts and doubts regarding these incidents through my artworks. Were all these events mere accidents or could they be part of a bigger picture, a conspiracy carefully planned to trigger more devastating results, creating chaos to the involving countries?

MEAA 2014: Winner Showcase, Cheong Tuck Wai

Cheong Tuck Wai is a native of Kuantan, Pahang and a graduate of Dasein Academy of Art, Kuala Lumpur where he majored in Illustration and Fine Arts. His works have been collected by the National Visual Arts Gallery of Malaysia, as well as United Overseas Bank (Malaysia) Bhd.

Tuck Wai’s achievements to date include winning the Gold Award at the UOB Painting of the Year in 2013 and he is also the Grand Prize Winner for The Nokia Arts Awards Malaysia in 2003. The artist has been exhibiting since 2002.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My artworks portray the importance of preserving the memories in our daily struggle to make a living in a fast-paced world; in which people, matters, scenes and objects are described and defined. All the artworks have an effect of being deserted, abandoned or discarded; which were achieved using various mixed materials to create a specific artistic beauty and ambience within the work, like they have been carved through time, as a way to make a compelling visual statement.

MEAA 2014: Winner Showcase, Shafiq Nordin

A native of the state of Negeri Sembilan, Shafiq Nordin gained his BA in Fine Arts (Hons) from UiTM Shah Alam, Selangor in 2012.

Shafiq has been participating actively in local group exhibitions since the completion of his formal art education. He was also chosen as a resident artist in Morne Art Gallery, Kuala Lumpur. His works were also exhibited in galleries in Singapore and Cologne, German.

Shafiq has also taken part in the Pertandingan Seni Tampak Terbuka, Galeri Seni Johor in 2009 and also won 3rd Prize at the Landscape Design Challenge, Malacca.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Most of my artworks using chimeric animals as the subject matter to personify human character and crisis. For ‘Mad Dog and The Superficial Inside’, ‘Hooreyy!!! Supercow Coming!!!’ and ‘Kingdom of Fake Crisis’; the theme lingers on humanity and world peace, following the Israeli illegal occupation in Palestine while the rest of the artworks reflects the issues of ethics in the local art scene.

MEAA 2014: Winner Showcase, Hilal Mazlan

Hilal Mazlan hails from Kuala Kangsar, Perak. He holds a Bachelor degree in Fine Arts from UiTM Shah Alam, Selangor and has been participating in numerous group exhibitions since 2008.

Apart from Malaysia, Hilal’s works is hanged at the Malaysian Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The artist currently lives and works in Shah Alam, Selangor.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

I do not term my artworks as a kinetic sculpture but would rather prefer the term robotic sculpture. In the beginning, I started building robots in forms and slowly inserted a little bit of the mechanical system as I go along, upgrading my artworks to another level. Though it is a bit high in expectancy, but to be able to produce robotic sculptures is my ultimate goal, and I will do whatever it takes to realize it; although it means continuous research and upgrading on the technical aspect.

MEAA 2010: Winner Showcase, MONOLOG by Kat

Mohd Bakir Baharom hails from Kedah and graduated from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM). Whilst he has served as an assistant to a number of celebrated Malaysian artists, he has also succeeded in creating his own distinct style with a unique manipulation of smoke to stain the canvas. He was an artist-in-residence at the 2009 Iskandar Malaysia Contemporary Art Show (IMCAS) and he has also garnered prizes at the Penang Art Festival in 2003 and 2004.

MEAA 2010: Winner Showcase, Fragment Defragmentation by Gan Chin Lee

Gan Chin Lee gained a diploma in Illustration from The One Academy of Communication Design in the late nineties, but continued his studies at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. He holds a Masters Degree from this esteemed institution. Gan’s works in this exhibition are realistic portrayals of everyday Malaysian life, and, the artist says he was influenced by art practices of Antonio Lopez Garcia and in restoring the experience of the first person perspective. 

Gan Chin Lee (b. 1977) is painter based in Kuala Lumpur. In 2008 he graduated with a Master’s Degree in Fine Art from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing China and in 1998 he received a diploma in Illustration from the One Academy of Communication Design. He has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions in Malaysia, China and Taiwan and most recently shown work in Tempo, The Gallery Star Hill, Art Triangle: The Gray Zone Project, National Art Gallery, The Energy Trap, Valentine Willie Fine Art at Annexe Gallery all in Kuala Lumpur and the 14th Da Dun Fine Arts Exhibition, Tai Chung City, Taiwan. In 2010 he was a finalist for the Starhill Gallery Visual Art Award (VAA) and in 2009 received the Malaysian Emerging Artist Award.
